Q. WHEN SHOULD I CONSIDER INSTALLING INSULATION? 

A. The best time to install insulation is when you are building a new home or extension, as it provides you with the opportunity to make your home as comfortable and quiet as possible.

In fact with the new building regulations coming into force throughout Australia this year, it is compulsory for all new homes to comply with a minimum standard of home insulation. However, many homeowners are choosing to increase the insulation level above the bare minimum, especially where air conditioning is installed or extra sound insulation is required. Q. CAN I INSTALL INSULATION IN MY EXISTING HOME?   

A. Existing homes can easily have insulation installed in most ceilings and under timber floors, space permitting. However, walls and vaulted ceilings can only be insulated during the recladding or replastering process.

Q. WHAT INSULATION SHOULD I CHOOSE?   

A. The best insulation to use depends on four factors:

  • What is being insulated e.g. ceiling, wall or floor.
  • The purpose for insulating e.g. thermal comfort or noise reduction.
  • The local climate.
  • The amount of energy used for heating and cooling.

Together these factors determine the R-value of the insulation you choose. The R-value is a measure of how well a material resists the flow of heat.

Q. SHOULD I INSTALL INSULATION IN SUMMER OR WINTER?  

A. Insulation is beneficial to the comfort of your home all year round and can save you hundreds of dollars each year through savings on energy consumption, so when considering installing insulation, there is no time like the present.

Q. HOW CAN I COOL MY HOME MORE EFFECTIVELY?  

A. Before going to the expense of installing a cooling system, you can make your home cooler during summer by:

  • Installing insulation – keeping your home cooler in summer. Shading windows from the outside, in particular east and west facing windows. You can do this with pergolas, eaves, shutters, awnings or trees. Shading windows on the inside with heavy curtains, pelmets or blinds. Using tinted glass in your windows.
  • Ensure good cross-flow ventilation to cool the house naturally with cooler evening breezes.

Q. HOW CAN I REDUCE MY HEATING BILL?   

A. The first step is to ensure your home is adequately insulated – an uninsulated house will be more expensive to heat as over 70% of heat will escape through your ceiling, walls and floors. Other steps you can take are as follows:

  • Heat only those areas in use at any one time. Close these areas off and keep windows and doors closed. Draught-proof your home – seal gaps around external doors, unused chimneys and windows, and any visible cracks. Reduce humidity build up by opening nearby windows if cooking/showering. Install double glazed windows in extreme climates. Use heavy drapes and blinds. Open curtains on windows facing the sun to let in the sunlight and warmth. Install window shutters.
  • Maximise north facing windows.

Q. DIY OR SUPPLY AND FIT SERVICE?   

A. Installing insulation is quite hot physical work, and although we have developed lighter 8 piece packs to make it easier on the DIY handyman, please remember that roof cavities can warm up significantly in summer - so do take care.It is also useful for you to know that a full supply and fit service is available through local Insul Fibre Approved Installers.
